I find it interesting that VA has used the argument repeatedly that jetguns have never been implicated as a cross contaminator of diseases. The biometric has always been that HBV was shown to be transmitted at a weight loss clinic once but that HCV is not as “hardy” a virus. With this analysis which isn’t a study or proof of any kind, the probability of a jetgun being the culprit in any HCV epidemic via military shot lines has always been in the category of “plausible”. This is the typical VA way of saying absence of evidence is negative evidence.
Well, now. Hello, Dolly. Take a read here on what they knew and when they knew it. Where has this been hiding all these years? While the study does not encompass HCV, it perfectly illustrates that a virus can be transmitted quite easily from one mouse to another. Not only one but 16 out of 49 mice. That is what we call “statistically significant”. As in more than a flash in the pan. As in 32.6% of 49 mice inoculated with a jetgun managed to come down with the same exact, identical disease.
The answer to your inevitable question is yes. It is useful in proving a jetgun claim because it directly shows that cross contamination occurs-something the VA has for decades insisted there is no medical study or evidence to rebut. This study was done in 1985 and the DoD did not withdraw these guns from service until 1998. Add this to the evidence pile. It is not an internet article but a documented case study on the efficacy of jetgun usage and a given date when it was shown to be unsanitary.

I have always suspected that I was infected with hcv from the inoculations I received during my navy service. I wonder if officer’s were infected at the same rate as enlisted?

In my letter of September 6, 1985, GHIINFZ. 190 579 (this journal 1985; 129: 1895 ), I was informed that there is no evidence that vaccination with the vaccination gun risks can be problematic with regard to the transfer of pathogenic microorganisms. Since this ruling, developments arose under which the judgment with regard to the vaccination gun should be revised.

Mark, I’m quite sure that spreading viruses via jet guns was NOT an intentional conspiracy to hurt/kill people. They were an efficient fast means of vaccination. Vaccinations save millions of lives worldwide but it’s true that some people have adverse effects. Nor were transfusions mean to hurt people. But they did. Contaminated blood bags delivered an inconceivable load of viruses. Mainstream science was slow to recognize what was going on with blood-borne viruses until the AIDs debacle. HIV used to take about 10 years to kill after infections with HIV but it appeared to kill young people very quickly. AIDS also killed hemophiliacs by the thousands–that was a shocker. And then other afflicted populations busted the myths about AIDS being only a gay disease resulting in millions of AIDS orphans in Africa.
People started to wake up to the problem in the 80s although there have been a few lonely voices in the medical wilderness.
But there HAS been a government cover up about jet guns and HCV–and it’s on-going as we know.Why? It’s all about the cost of compensating victims who were exposed to dirty medical devices carrying infected blood person-to-person on the job (as in the military workplace) and other groups. Because of the cover-up, people didn’t know they needed to get tested and treated.
Europeans have been much more forthcoming about these problems and have pushed and shamed US scientists into complying with the “One and Only One” safe injection needle campaign. I wouldn’t be so angry if they would just come clean about the statistical associations between jet guns and HCV/HIV infections. For pre-1991 transfused persons, if you got HIV/HCV blood, your immune system would have to be super-duper to fight that onslaught. But again, the medical people were trying to save, not take, lives. But I sympathize with your frustration about this and I hope truth will prevail.
