WGM’S FOOTLOCKER– LAND OF THE MIDNIGHT KIMCHEE

WGM chose this Veterans Day to reminisce about his time “over there”. It doesn’t shock me. This is a rather poignant time when we look back on our service and either relish it, curse it or wonder what possessed us to sign up. Whatever the reason, we can’t rewind and erase. It’s also nice to put a face to a man who bearded the vA in their own den and walked away with 100% P&T. Time for the ILP assault now.

We all looked pretty steely-eyed and dashing back then.

And I thought I had it rough with no air conditioning in my hootch. I never thought I’d say this but I’d take Laos over Korea any day of the week in retrospect. Even two tours.

    Being Mounted is highly preferred.
    Mounted, numba 1 GI.
    Dismounted, numba 10 GI.

I had all kinds of radios, AM and FM.
When dismounted you get to hump the PRC’s, aka “The Prick”. Humpin The Prick hurt and it was heavy. The Prick with crypto was the heavy one.

I remember the PRC 29’s very well. My primary was 31n (patch panel), but most of the time I was working the MRC 115 Radio relay and carrier equipment all mounted on a trailer. My Patch panel was on a 5/4. I had to learn all the different types of communications because sooner or later they had to go thru my patch panel. Radios, teletype,radio-teletype, switchboards and the old fashion land lines.Still looking for the old crank telephones for fishing! lol

31Bravo was my job, not defferent from 11Bravo, sometimes called 11Bush. About the only difference was a clearance for crypto.

Awww the fond memories it brings back. TDC,Inchon, Seoul,Hiking thru the Hills all over North Korea.Tunnels everywhere on every hill top.Camping with our buddies from Amour,Calvary and the Good Ole Invantry.1940’s/50’s C and K rations heated on your jeeps exhaust manifold.Never heard of MRE’s till after I was out of service. Sitting on a mountain top, 20 miles from the nearest village, and you wouldn’t believe what you could trade for 5 gals of Diesel.*wink* Look closely at M-16’s no clips. If they gave us ammunition we might cause a war.(Oh, thats right,no peace treaty ever created). The plastic stocks were to be used as Clubs(??).I often think about my time in the First Oriental Disneyland.Thats what I called it anyway. You probably wouldn’t believe half of the stories I could tell ya. But WGM would probably know. What no snowball fights in Laos?Funny how Our world in Korea was always Black and White. No vacation in Korea would be complete without pics of each season.Never took any during monsoon season, too busy helping Cavs APCs pulling our communication equipment thru the mud holes. I compare current pics online with mine 40 yrs ago and boy have things changed BiG Time! Oh well, Times they keep a Changin’!! Mikey
