It leaves a lump in your throat if you’ve ever been to a VA cemetery like Arlington. Many years ago when I was visiting one, someone said to her daughter “What a waste of humanity. Look at all these graves.” I prefer to look at them as individual testimonials to our freedom and the willingness of the fallen to ensure we stay that way. Waste? I don’t see it. Ultimate sacrifice comes to mind. None of us set out to get a spanky white tombstone with our name, rank and airspeed on it-but then I don’t know any who purposefully set out to avoid the danger inherent in the job.

So sad. We long for peace but as long as there are Hitlers in the world, we men and women will have to go to war or support our armed troops it in whatever ways we can. We have to defend the helpless when tyrants gain control. During WWII, my late aunt served in the Army in Europe. My mother, who had two young sons, volunteered to drive an ambulance in her community during the war.. My Irish-born grandmother packed up boxes of clothing and food and mailed them to relatives in England and Ireland and on a meager income. She said the need was great due to rationing so she did her bit.
